Robbery
In 1997, there were an estimated 497,950 robberies, or about 186 robberies per 100,000 people nationwide.

Street or highway robberies accounted for half of the robbery offenses.

Forty percent of all robberies were committed with firearms. Strong-arm tactics accounted for 38 percent.

Property Crime
In 1997, the estimated loss in stolen property totaled more than $15 billion, an average loss per offense of $1,311.

Burglary
There were an estimated 2.4 million burglaries in 1997; two of every three were home burglaries.

Sixty-six percent of all burglaries involved forcible entry, and more than half - 52 percent - occurred during daylight hours. The average loss for residential burglaries was $1,305, and for nonresidential, $1,391.
